News: Biofuels Digest Awards for 2010

It's the end of the year, and so many places look back onto the year and evaluate their accomplishments. So Biofuel's Digest, a leading biofuels news site, has looked at the industry and handed out a multitude of awards. The ones I consider the most important ones are:

Company of the Year: Solazyme
Tech of the Year (pilot): Lanzatech
Tech of the Year (demonstration state): Taurus Energy, Sekab
Tech of the Year (commercial stage): Renewable Energy Group
Product of the Year (fuel): Amyris (Farnesane)
Product of the Year (renewable chemicals): Genencor (Bioisoprene)
Product of the Year (bio-based products): OPX Biotechnology (Bioacrylic)

Of note also is that SG Biofuels (not to be confused with Sythetic Genomics) and Sapphire Energies mentioned in my previous survey also won some awards:

In Other Words: A Life on Our Planet

I just watched this documentary together with my son and my wife. Different from David's typical approach of sparse objective commentary, this documentary movie is a personal witness statement that David Attenborough is making describing how our planet has changed in his life time. With my thesis defense coming up this Monday, I really did not have as much time to share all the interesting things I came across lately. But I did not want to miss the chance to make a quick note to myself and the readers of this site of an interesting paper, titled "DNA-based programming of quantum dot valency, self-assembly and luminescence" just published in Nature Nanotechnology . Grigory Tikhomirov et al. report "the self-assembly of quantum dot complexes using cadmium telluride nanocrystals capped with specific sequences of DNA.
